The Sound of Wings

A weary beginning to the day. Not a too sound night. Asleep with a low lamp on. Woken by the sound of a clickity-buzz and then a soft landing right next to my ear. I quickly sit up, look to find a cricket that managed to miss my head by millimeters. He flew into the pillow beside me and was nestled inside, right at the edge. In swift fashion, I get up to grab my glass and small book. Scoot—in he goes. I set the glass covered with the book on top on the kitchen counter until morning to release him.

I’ve grown accustomed to the sound the spider makes when he sometimes jumps down upon the chest of drawers or some other hard surface. And I’ve grown accustomed to look for him in the crevices he likes to wedge himself into and sometimes when I wake in the night, I look to make sure he’s not above me. I prefer when he’s not above me, prefer when he’s in his corner. This one in particular, is too hard to capture because he stays up high, and when he comes down the wall, he’s quick. Always, if I can, I take spiders outside. One day recently though, he or she was much too large for me to handle and I had to do what I didn’t want to do. I wrote about the experience in my notebook. I still feel traumatized by the whole thing and I suppose it is still filtering out of my system.

I much prefer the sound of a million wings flying through the sky…

Rebb,

Well, almost every summer in Japan, I have to take care of one or two huge spiders, so I know the situation. The thing is, if I let go, I'm afraid it comes back.

I found the below site. In old days, our life was slower, and we used to enjoy listening to the songs of insects more.

Thank for reminding me of this pleasure.

Are those common grass spiders? Some spiders can really poison you. I´ve seen a scar caused by a spider bite. The woman had skin necrosis (Is that how it´s called Dr. J? ) and had to have plastic surgery. I don´t mind spiders near me, as long as they won´t hurt me.
We want you safe, Rebbs!

Yes Lu, if not cared enough, some time it can produce necrosis of skin which requires skin grafting by plastic surgeon.

Jitu,

Thank you for your most kind words.

Keiko, Wow, pet spiders. You are brave. Thanks for sharing the site. I like the image of old days when life was slower. I'm glad I was able to remind you.

Lu, I'm not exactly sure if they are grass spiders. I don't mind the spiders with long light colored legs, but when I see big bodies with what looks like two prongs that could hurt, I get very nervous. Thank you so much for your concern, Lu. That is so sweet :) That's all I ask is that the dear spiders don't hurt me and cooperate when I try to take them outside.

Rebb,

No, I don't pet any spiders. I leave small ones alone, but if a huge spider appears, I gather some newspaper and bang and kill it. I'm sorry. I love nature, but I can't call 911 on it.

Maybe I told you before, I grew up in the house without screen doors. And in the old days, we had many many insects all day long especially during summer. Young people today probably don't or cannot kill house invaders, but in my days, we learned to react to them quickly. We didn't use insect killing powder.
