Two Photos with Kyo and Me

Lu's blog, "My life as a dog," with a picture of her and Xodó made me think of a picture I had with my childhood dog, Kyo. I didn't realize how mangled this photo was until I found it again. I don't remember that day, but it looks like Kyo and I were tired, but willing to be photographed. The reason the photo is all torn up and worn out is that when I was in my late teens, my rambunctious lab go into my things and those are his teeth marks all over. I'm glad he didn't rip up the whole picture.

This next photo is of me in my ice skating outfit with Kyo. I suppose I look a bit more serious in this photo. You can see us a little better. My brother came up with the name for our dog and I don't know what inspired him to name him that. I like the name, though. Kyo was a great dog and very unique. He would go on his own adventures around the neighborhood. I would always know when he went down to the creek, which was about a 20 minute walk. He'd always come back muddy. And then he would take himself across the street to the grocery store and because the butchers would occasionally give him bones, he would enter the store, and the cashiers would get upset and have to keep telling him to leave. If he was gone for too long, we'd know where to find him. He was one of my favorite dogs—such a free spirit.

Rebb,

At first, I thought the first picture was taken in snow. Kyo is an Irish Setter, right?

You’re so cute. What a perfect cow girl outfit! Or is that a sheriff outfit? Anyway, you look very serious and authoritative in the second photo. I love it!

An Irish Setter. They make great friends.Free spirits, as you said, but extremely loyal.

Rebb,

I don't know why I wrote a cow girl or sheriff outfits. I don't know how those look like. Maybe because of the hat. I love that hat.

Also, you seem floating in the air. Are you sitting on a chair? I don't see the legs of a chair. Kyo is well behaved. I recently learned a Chinese name, Kyo. Maybe I'll talk about it later.

Keiko, As Lu pointed out, Kyo is an Irish Setter. I thought that my parent’s said he was also part Golden Retriever, but I don’t remember if he was a mix or not. You were right to think it was a cow girl or sheriff outfit. I can see that the tassels hanging and the hat would give the impression of a sheriff. This particular performance was with a group. We were cowgirls.

I’m actually squatting, holding myself up on my own legs and with Kyo’s support. Ah, so Kyo is actually a Chinese name. I thought it sounded like it could be Japanese. Interesting.

Lu, Yes, Kyo was definitely a great friend and very loyal. I have never seen one that looks quite like him.

You look so cute in that picture, Rebb! I have a photo with an Irish Setter, Sadie, I used to 'dogsit'. When I looked at Kyo in the picture, Sadie and her personality came to my mind. I´ll scan that photo and post it in my blog.

Thanks, Lu. I'm going to go have a look at Sadie...

Rebb,

It looks to me that your toes seem not touching the ground. The grass seems covering a part of Kyo's paws.

I love this photo and the above photo, too. The outfit above is also interesting. It seems some kind of traditional formal dress.

Forgot about Kyo. Yes, Kyo can be Japanese. My cousin's name is Kyoko. Like Keiko, there are many different kind of kanji to write. One is 京 "capital." Chinese Kyo I saw the other day was 競.
It means compete.

Rebb, I'm sorry to confuse you, but that Kyo could pronouce differently in Chinese. You're right. It sounds more like Japanese, but most Japanese dog or human names have more that one beat.

Keiko, I think the reason my toes look like they are not touching the grass is the blade sticks out about an inch from the boot and so the boot doesn’t touch the grass.

Now that you mention it, I guess the outfit is interesting. I’ve never looked at with fresh eyes before.

About the Chinese Kyo. The symbol is interesting—I’m sorry I don’t know the proper name for the characters. I find it interesting that compete is two symbols that are identical. Thanks for explaining about Kyo, Keiko!

Rebb,

Right, 競 has two symbols to show they're competing.

Not that I want to confuse you, but Kyo (京, capital) can be pronounced as Kei also in Japanese. The train I usually take is Keihin-Express-Line, and it is written as 京浜急行.

Rebb, you're skipping all the fundamental Japanese lessons and proceeding to advance Japanese.
